A recent National Retail Federation survey conducted by BIGresearch indicates that a record 226 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend. This is the highest number of early bird shoppers in survey history! But, there are still many that are racking their brains for appropriate Christmas gifts. A study conducted by Nielson found that books, clothing and technology are the product categories that are the most popular for Christmas gifts this season. This Nielson survey includes online respondents in 56 countries. Nooks and E-readers are quite popular Christmas gifts, although traditional hardback books are still top selling Christmas gifts. Gift cards are also quite popular this holiday season. The study states that consumers plan on spending the same amount of money on Christmas gifts as they did last year, but many will spend slightly more on toys, gift cards, technology, apparel and video games. The Nielson study suggests that 73% of consumers around the world plan to spend the same amount or less on Christmas gifts as compared to last year. Online sales have seen quite a spurt this 2011. According to comScore, a company that specializes in crafting successful marketing, sales, product development and trading strategies; consumers spent about $9.7 billion online from Nov. 1 to Nov. 20.
